FAQ & A

The most common questions about buying butt pads - and our answers.

What is butt padding?

Butt padding refers to inserts or built-in cushions (foam or silicone) worn in specialized underwear, shapewear, or leggings to add fullness and shape to the hip and/or rear area. They're used for aesthetic enhancement, costume/dance purposes, evenings out,  asymmetry, or added comfort for sitting.

What materials are butt pads usually made from? The two most common are:

  • Foam — lightweight, breathable, budget-friendly, but compresses over time
  • Silicone — heavier, moves more naturally and mimics real tissue, gives the most realistic look and feel, and tends to be warmer to wear and more expensive

Will padding be visible under my clothes?

Quality pads are designed to be seamless under most fabrics. But thin knits or very tight/light-colored clothing may show pad edges. For these challenging fabrics or fashions, choose silicone padding, which has the thinnest edges.

How do I pick the right size?

Most brands size by hip measurement, not pants size. Measure around the fullest part of your hips and check the brand's chart — sizing varies a lot between brands, so don't assume your usual size will match. If buying a padded panty, choose your correct panty size (not pad size).

For example, maybe you're typically a size Medium and you want really thick, dramatic curves - this does not mean that you buy a 5XL padded panty. Instead, look for a padded panty style with removable padding and customizable pad thickness. This way, you can purchase a size Medium panty and a pair of 5XL booty pads.

Are the pads removable or sewn in? Depends on the product:

  • Removable pads/pocket-panty style — pads slide into sewn pockets, so you can wash the garment without the pads or size up/down
  • Sewn-in/fixed — pads are permanently attached, molded to the shape of the buttocks; generally more affordable but less flexible

How do I wash them?

Removable pads: hand wash foam or wipe down silicone, air dry only (heat will likely damage foam or silicone). Sewn-in styles: check the tag — many require hand washing or a mesh laundry bag on a gentle cycle.

Can I wear them all day / while sitting?

Foam is generally fine for all-day wear and is usually preferred in hotter climates/seasons. Silicone is heavier and more noticeable during long periods of use. Both foam and silicone are appropriate for extended sitting.

Is there a difference between shapewear pads and standalone pads?

Standalone padded underwear/briefs typically refers to underwear with pad pockets that hold butt and/or hip pads in place.

Standalone pads typically refers to the adhesive butt and hip pads called "Sticky Buns" and "Sticky Hips" offered by the Love My Bubbles brand. These pads stick to clothing, not to skin to ensure a safe way to wear pads in any shapewear, even shapers that do not have pockets for padding.

How long do they last?

Foam typically breaks down or flattens after several months of regular wear/washing (picture the foam cushions in a car seat or couch). Silicone lasts longer with proper care — often a year or more.
